After the mountain climbing in Huang Shan Chris spotted a new destination affordable China travel packagesfor us on the map of China. Hakka villages with special tulou houses in South East China. So we took some adventurous train and bus rides to arrive to the middle of nowhere village of Liulian (I bet you wont find it on the map). The village is famous of the constructions by Hakka people, they built huge so-called tulou houses, where they could fit few hundred people. This tradition came from the era of the clans, where clans were living in close communities.

In order to protect themselves from the bandits and wild animals the clans built these round or rectangular or oval shaped buildings, which walls were made of bamboo sticks, glutinous rice and some wood chips. The bedrooms were located on the 3rd or 4th floor, as they did not build windows on the lower levels for security reasons. The middle of the buildings had open sky and underneath they kept there domestic animals, being pigs, ducks, chickens, etc.

In Liulian we were eager to sleep in such a tulou room top 10 China tour packages, so thanks to Lonely Planet we found a hotel who could arrange this for us. The cheapest accommodation so far, 30 yuan for one room (EUR 3). OK, the room was very basic, it had a door, a window, a double bed-kinda thing and a bin... but come on, this is the real experience. We could use the bathroom of the hotel, and we also found the outside toilet in the backyard... I decided not to use it though... The hotel owner lady was very kind (much younger than us, approx 22). She introduced us to her Japanese friend, who was also very handy as she did not speak much English. Hiroshi was a nice guy, anthropology student from Japan doing a research on the hakka people, and living in the village for over a year. He told us some nice stories and also arranged that we could have our meals with the hotel owner's family, which meant good food at low cost. So we had basically all our meals in their company, which was all right. We also got offered of their home made sweet rice wine, which tasted really good (especially compared to the Chinese spirits we were used to.... ).

After our "family dinner" we arranged to buy some extra wine from our host and headed back to our room as there was basically nothing else to do in the village. It was just before 8 pm, but we already were late.... apparently the tolou buildings get closed at around 8 pm every night, so no in and out traffic possible... not even to the toilet.... this was a real surprise, so we quickly ran back to the hotel for help to get someone to open the door for us... thanks God the host's uncle lived in the same building and he opened the side door. So we got in... as it was still early we decided to play Solo (a funnier version of the Uno card game) and to finish the rice wine.... and then we remembered that there was no access to the toilet... auch... you may guess what the solution was.... knowing the facilities in our room... worked well...

We visited Linxia to get a feel of the atmosphere in this typical Muslim town China travel deals. You can see this clearly in the way how people are dressed, in the many mosques and in the prayers through mosque loudspeakers. Another typical feature for Linxia, are the big glasses men wear.

We visited the Wanshou guan temple on the hills around Linxia. As you climb up the different stairs, you arrive at different temple areas. A brick stone pagoda and a temple bell stand on the top. We met some very friendly people: monks and frequent visitors.

While we were there they had the celebration of the 50th anniversary of town. The whole town was flagged. Ten thousands of people from town and around were trying to pick-up a glimpse of the official festivities on a location outside town. But these were limited to honoured guests who were been taking around in buses and private cars. Besides a brand-new water fountain, there was not much more to see for the big masses. We spent some time in a Taoist monastery, were we were kindly invited for a lunch and tea. The atmosphere was very real.

From Linxia we visited in near-by Hezhen, two paleontological museums: the existing one, and the brand new which is next to it. We took a minibus at the exit of the South bus station (Qiche nanzhan - 5Y - 45min). The museums are located before entering town, you can’t miss them at the right hand side of the road. We paid 30Y entrance fee for the existing museum, and in the new one we got in for free, as everyone else, due to the official opening. Locals were all interested to get in! While the task may seem nigh-impossible—due to the exodus of similarly-minded Chinese travelling en mass to any of China's many top tourist attractions—finding a quiet place to visit during a Chinese national holiday is possible. Seriously. We don't understand why you're laughing.

Finding a less crowded destination to visit is easier than you may think, and most of them can still provide enough accommodations and attractions to make your visit worthwhile. Sure, no place in China is completely without crowds, but the trick is find places that are either left behind during the mad holiday rush, or are really far away.

The first and most obvious thing you'll want to do if you're not keen on being packed-in with 100,000 of your closest Chinese friends is to avoid the really popular destinations. Cross off Hainan, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Forbidden City, and the Great Wall off of your list. This is one of those times when the nebulous searching for a "real" Chinese cultural experience gets a little bit too real. Second piece of advice? Forget trains and stick to planes. You might have to shell out a bit more, but at least you won't start your vacation with a massive headache.

Now that you're set, here are five quieter places to travel to during national holidays in China.

1) Hohhot
This one is best if you hail from an artic homeland and you don't mind freezing temperatures (highs in the -1 degree range and lows in the -15 degree range on average during winter time). The upside is that many people don't want to handle the weather, so that makes February a low month for tourism in Hohhot. But, hey, who said you wouldn't have to sacrifice for a (relatively) peaceful Chinese New Years? Hohhot does have several unique cultural aspects to make bearing the cold worthwhile.

Of course, there will still be people on the Bund and on East Nanjing road, but in the smaller, less glitzy corners of Shanghai, you can take a break from the hyperactive pace that normally defines Shanghai.

And if nothing else, Shanghai is easy to get in to. Flights from all over the world go into Shanghai's Pudong International Airport. Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport deals with a great majority of domestic flights. Due to the high number of flights running into the city you'll be able to find tickets from as low as 500 RMB depending on where you're starting from.

3) Taipei
Taipei's difficulty of access to mainlanders is its saving grace. While the city, like Shanghai, still has plenty of people, it can seem downright roomy to anybody who has spent the holidays on the mainland. It also helps that there is a mass retreat to the countryside surrounding the city during the holidays, so a fair number of Taiwanese are also gone, giving you a chance to see the quieter side of the city. Granted the train and bus stations may still be swarming with people trying to leave the city, but you should have an easier time if you're trying to get into Taipei.

Also, contrary to the mainland, a number of places in the city will continue to stay open despite the festivities. Finding accommodations at a hotel is comparatively easier, but it would still be wise to book your rooms in advance. Fortunately, like Shanghai, Taipei is very easy to get to since it is a major international hub. There will be no shortage of flights to the island and there will be plenty of hotels and accommodations that will still be open to cater to visitors. Keep in mind that the flight will set you back 2000-3000 RMB due to the fact that it's technically an international flight from the mainland.

4) Kashgar
Way out in the farthest reaches of western Xinjiang lies one of the most unique and culturally interesting cities in China. Few people in China venture out this far west, but those who do are greatly rewarded. Though inhabitants of Kashgar (main destination for Silk Road tours) still celebrate Chinese holidays such as the New Year, due to the majority of Kashgar's inhabitants being Muslim Uyghur they tend to put a greater focus on traditional Islamic holidays. Kashgar also has several interesting day trips away from the city, like Shipton's Arch and the Karakorum Highway.?

The one downside to Kashgar is that you will have to go way out there to reach it. Your best bet to make it there would be to take a flight to Urumqi and take another flight down to Kashgar to avoid the horrifically overcrowded trains. Depending on where you live, the whole trip by flight could take you upwards of six or seven hours, including the transfer in Urumqi. And this trip will be even more expensive than to Taipei, with flights from eastern cities in the 3500-4000 RMB range for round trip tickets.??

5) Beihai
Nestled in the warm southern Guangxi Province, Beihai benefits from two things. First, it's located near the two significantly more tourist-friendly cities of Guilin and Yangshuo; and second, it is comparatively undiscovered (though this is quickly changing). Beihai is also significantly cheaper than nearby Hainan Island, and you'll still be able to enjoy many beautiful beaches that are yet untrampled by the soles of thousands of ocean-loving Chinese tourists.

Beihai is also relatively easy to get to. If you're in the southern part of China consider yourself lucky because there are flights leaving from Guangzhou daily. If you don't live in the southern part of China, you'll need to fly to Guangzhou or Guilin and make the appropriate connections from there. Even if you are coming from Beijing, the tickets to Guilin are still only in the 1000-1750 RMB range, plus the added travel costs of getting to Beihai.

Sometimes, when I tell people where I am from, they are perplexed. But when I explain that I come from the same place as the late Premier Zhou Enlai, most people know what I am talking about.

I was born and raised in Huai'an, hometown of our beloved founding premier of the People's Republic of China. Located in the hinterlands of north Jiangsu province, Huai'an is a peaceful city nurtured by the Grand Canal, Huaihe River Yangtze River tour and Hongze Lake. These waters have likely helped cultivate great people like Zhou, whose name, photos, and statues can be found everywhere in the city. His former residence, his relics' exhibition hall and memorial hall are popular tourist sites.

The labyrinthine woods gave us a perfect spot to play hide-and-seek, and we used to camp and play games near the cherry trees. The gigantic rockery, refined sculptures of animals, and of course, dazzling cherry blossoms, brought me great pleasure at that time.

Today, Cherry Blossom Island is still a popular hangout for youngsters, and almost every primary school in Huai'an will organize a spring outing to the park China vacation deals.

THE season for eating freshwater hairy crabs is upon us. For almost two centuries, it has been an autumn ritual for nearly every Shanghai China vacation deals family to eat da zha xie or hairy crabs when the cold, crisp winds pick up.

How to get there: With the opening of the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge, travel time from the city center has been shortened to less than an hour.

Shajiabang

Not all of 593-acre Tai Lake is used for raising crabs - only the eastern part near the towns of Jiegang, Dongshan and Xishan. There, the water is clear with the aquatic life abundant.

These crabs are bigger than Yangcheng Lake crabs and are known as "big buddy" for their large, powerful pincers. They have a gray-green shell, white underside and tender meat.

Because of their size, they are more expensive than Yangcheng Lake crabs.

Yangcheng Lake

The best-known and most marketed destination for hairy crabs is Yangcheng Lake in neighboring Jiangsu Province. The crabs are so famous and there are so many counterfeits that Yangcheng Lake growers' association attaches a numbered disc to each crab - of course, these too can be faked.

As part of the East China Sea estuary, Yangcheng Lake has a crab-friendly environment - clean, shallow, sun-drenched waters that promote the growth of the aquatic food the crabs like to eat.

The lake bottom is hard clay, compelling the crabs to use their leg muscles to move around - this develops the muscles, so they become larger and more succulent. The clay also is rich in iron and trace miners, giving the claws a yellowish tint.

And it imparts a slightly sweet taste. Actually, the vegetables grown around the lake, such as carrots and cabbage, also taste a bit sweet due to the soil and water. Chicken eggs too are a bit sweet.

Different parts of Yangcheng Lake produce crabs of different quality.

The best crabs are from the eastern part where the water is only two meters deep with plentiful aquatic life, including fish and shrimp.
